Abstract

Time integration is the most versatile method for analyzing semi-discretized nonlinear equations of motion. Nevertheless, the responses are in general inexact. For problems involved in nonlinearities originating in friction, the inexactness is not approaching zero, even for very small integration steps. This limits the maximum accuracy obtainable. The reason of the phenomenon is recently studied by the authors. In this paper, based on the trend of the errors changes and the notion of Richardson extrapolation, a method to arrive at higher maximum accuracies is proposed. An overview on the challenges forward is also addressed.
