Abstract

Model-based inverse problems emerge as an alternative means to reconstruct buried objects in structures. In this paper, we propose a method to detect multiple flaws in massive permeable structures. The extended finite element method (XFEM) is used as a tool to solve the coupled hydro-mechanical problem. Simultaneously, level set front propagation defined by Hamilton–Jacobi equations is adopted for solving the inverse problem of finding the material changes from measured data. A system of equations is proposed to derive the shape derivatives of the objective functions. The method is then applied to detect possible flaws in a masonry dam. The results obtained indicate that the method enables the efficient identification of hidden flaws in masonry dams.
