Despite substantial progress during the last two decades, the development of efficient and robust discretisation and solution techniques for the computer simulation of fluidstructure interaction has remained an active area of research. The simulation of numerous applications still requires excessive computational resources or lies beyond the scope of today’s methodologies. This presentation investigates the challenges posed by problems involving fluidstructure interaction and outlines possible solution strategies. Interface tracking and interface capturing techniques are explained and the performance of monolithic and partitioned solution strategies is discussed. In particular, a recently developed methodology combining an immersed boundary method with a staggered solution scheme is presented. A model problem is derived and used to assess the performance of different partitioned solution schemes. Benchmark tests are provided and an industrial case study of hydraulic valves is presented.
